This measure would recognize April, 2014, as California Poppy Month.

P1 1WHEREAS, On April 26 and 27, 2014, the Antelope Valley
2will host the California Poppy Festival, an annual event to celebrate
3the state’s most colorful visitor, the California poppy; and
4WHEREAS, The California poppy is the official flower of the
5State of California; and
6WHEREAS, The California Poppy Reserve is located in the
7Antelope Valley and was designated as a state reserve to emphasize
8the strict protection of a specific resource, the California poppy,
9by making available significant displays of blooming poppies and
10associated wildflowers for the public to enjoy; and
11WHEREAS, The poppy has always symbolized California’s
12good life, as its color mirrors California’s climate and charm, and
13the profusion of its blooms reflects the richness of the Golden
14State; and
15WHEREAS, Many cultures and people in history have used the
16poppy in their legends and folklore; and
P2 1WHEREAS, In Native American history, the Great Spirit sent
2the Fire Flower to drive away the evils of frost and famine, and to
3fill the land with warmth and plenty; and
4WHEREAS, For the Spanish, the poppy was an omen, a promise
5that California was rich and fertile, and they called it Copa de Oro,
6the cup of gold; and
7WHEREAS, To the miners of the Gold Rush of 1849, the poppy
8was a symbol of gold, since the flower and metal shared a common
9color and both were abundant; and
10WHEREAS, The Antelope Valley shares a common commitment
11to promote among the residents of the State of California an
12appreciation of the California poppy through tourism and
13educational opportunities; now, therefore, be it
14Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
15thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby recognizes April,
162014, as California Poppy Month.
17Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
18of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
