This measure would recognize April 2014 as California Poppy Month.

P1 1WHEREAS, On April 26 and 27, 2014, the Antelope Valley
2will host the California Poppy Festival, an annual event to celebrate
3the state’s most colorful visitor, the California poppy; and
4WHEREAS, The California poppy is the official flower of the
5State of California; and
P2 1WHEREAS, The California Poppy Reserve is located in the
2Antelope Valley and was designated as a state reserve to emphasize
3the strict protection of a specific resource, the California poppy,
4by making available significant displays of blooming poppies and
5associated wildflowers for the public to enjoy; and
6WHEREAS, The poppy has always symbolized California’s
7good life, as its color mirrors California’s climate and charm, and
8the profusion of its blooms reflects the richness of the Golden
9State; and
10WHEREAS, Many cultures and people in history have used the
11poppy in their legends and folklore; and
12WHEREAS, In Native American history, the Great Spirit sent
13the Fire Flower to drive away the evils of frost and famine, and to
14fill the land with warmth and plenty; and
15WHEREAS, For the Spanish, the poppy was an omen, a promise
16that California was rich and fertile, and they called it Copa de Oro,
17the cup of gold; and
18WHEREAS, To the miners of the Gold Rush of 1849, the poppy
19was a symbol of gold, since the flower and metal shared a common
20color and both were abundant; and
21WHEREAS, The Antelope Valley shares a common commitment
22to promote among the residents of the State of California an
23appreciation of the California poppy through tourism and
24educational opportunities; now, therefore, be it
25Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
26thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby recognizes April
272014 as California Poppy Month.
28Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
29of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
