An act to amend Section 12517.2 of the Vehicle Code, relating to vehicles.

AB 722, as amended, Lowenthal. Vehicles: driver’s licenses: medical examinations.

Existing law requires applicants for an original or renewal certificate to drive a schoolbus, school pupil activity bus, youth bus, general public paratransit vehicle, or farm labor vehicle to submit a report, on a form approved by the department, of a medical examination of the applicant given not more than 2 years prior to the date of the application by a physician licensed to practice medicine, a licensed advanced practice registered nurse qualified to perform a medical examination, or a licensed physician assistant.

This bill would add a doctor of chiropracticbegin insert and a certified medical examiner, as specified,end insert to the list of persons who may make a report of a medical examination of the specified applicants.

The people of the State of California do enact as follows:

SECTION 1.  

Section 12517.2 of the Vehicle Code is amended
2to read:

12517.2.  

(a) Applicants for an original or renewal certificate
2to drive a schoolbus, school pupil activity bus, youth bus, general
3public paratransit vehicle, or farm labor vehicle shall submit a
4report of a medical examination of the applicant given not more
5than two years prior to the date of the application by a physician
6licensed to practice medicine, a licensed advanced practice
7registered nurse qualified to perform a medical examination, a
8licensed physician assistant,begin delete or a doctor of chiropractic.end deletebegin insert a licensed
9doctor of chiropractic, or a licensed medical examiner listed on
10the most current National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners,
11as adopted by the United States Department of Transportation, as
12published by the notice in the Federal Register, Volume 77, Number
1377, Friday, April 20, 2012, on pages 24104 to 24135, inclusive,
14and pursuant to Section 391.42 of Title 49 of the Code of Federal
15Regulations.end insert
The report shall be on a form approved by the
16department.

17(b) Schoolbus drivers, within the same month of reaching 65
18years of age and each 12th month thereafter, shall undergo a
19medical examination, pursuant to Section 12804.9, and shall submit
20a report of that medical examination on a form as specified in
21subdivision (a).
