An act to amend Section 12517.2 of the Vehicle Code, relating to vehicles.

AB 722, as amended, Lowenthal. Vehicles: driver’s licenses: medical examinations.

Existing law requires applicants for an original or renewal certificate to drive a schoolbus, school pupil activity bus, youth bus, general public paratransit vehicle, or farm labor vehicle to submit a report, on a form approved by the department, of a medical examination of the applicant given not more than 2 years prior to the date of the application by a physician licensed to practice medicine, a licensed advanced practice registered nurse qualified to perform a medical examination, or a licensed physician assistant.

This bill would add abegin insert specified licensedend insert doctor of chiropracticbegin delete and a certified medical examiner, as specified,end delete to the list of persons who may make a report of a medical examination of the specified applicants.

SECTION 1.  

Section 12517.2 of the Vehicle Code is amended

12517.2.  

(a) Applicants for an original or renewal certificate
4to drive a schoolbus, school pupil activity bus, youth bus, general
5public paratransit vehicle, or farm labor vehicle shall submit a
6report of a medical examination of the applicant given not more
7than two years prior to the date of the application by a physician
8licensed to practice medicine, a licensed advanced practice
9registered nurse qualified to perform a medical examination, a

11or a licensed medical examinerend delete

12current National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners, as
13adopted by the United States Department of Transportation, as
14published by the notice in the Federal Register, Volume 77,
15Number 77, Friday, April 20, 2012, on pages 24104 to 24135,
16inclusive, and pursuant to Section 391.42 of Title 49 of the Code
17of Federal Regulations. The report shall be on a form approved by
18the department.

19(b) Schoolbus drivers, within the same month of reaching 65
20years of age and each 12th month thereafter, shall undergo a
21medical examination, pursuant to Section 12804.9, and shall submit
22a report of that medical examination on a form as specified in
23subdivision (a).
