Existing law establishes the University of California, under the administration of the Regents of the University of California, as one of the segments of public postsecondary education in this state. Existing law provides that the name “University of California” is the property of the state, and prohibits a person, without permission of the regents, from using that name in any of various ways.
This bill would make technical, nonsubstantive changes in the provisions relating to the use of the name “University of California.”

The people of the State of California do enact as follows:
Section 92000 of the Education Code is amended
2to read:
(a) The name “University of California” is the property
4of the state.begin delete Noend deletebegin insert Aend insert person shallbegin insert notend insert, without the permission of the
5Regents of the University of California, use this name, or any
6abbreviation of it or any name of which these words are a part, in
7any of the following ways:
P2 1(1) To designate any business, social, political, religious, or
2other organization, including, but not limited to, any corporation,
3firm, partnership,
association, group, activity, or enterprise.
4(2) To imply, indicatebegin insert,end insert or otherwise suggest thatbegin delete any suchend deletebegin insert theend insert
5 organization, or any product or service ofbegin delete suchend deletebegin insert thatend insert organization
6is connected or affiliated with, or is endorsed, favored, or supported
7by, or is opposed by the University of California.
8(3) To display, advertise, or announce this name publicly at, or
9in connection with, any meeting,
assembly, or demonstration, or
10any propaganda, advertising, or promotional activity of any kind
11which has for its purpose or any part of its purpose the support,
12endorsement, advancement, opposition, or defeat of any strike,
13lockout, or boycott or of any political, religious, sociological, or
14economic movement, activity, or program.
15(b) Nothing in this section shall interfere with or restrict the
16right of any person to make a true and accurate statement of his
17or her present or former relationship or connection with, his or her
18employment by, or his or her enrollment in, the University of
19California in the course of stating his or her experience or
20qualifications for any academic, governmental, business, or
21professional credit or enrollment, or in connection with any
22academic, governmental, professional, or other employment
23whatsoever.
