AB 836 (Skinner) - As Amended: April 9, 2013
Policy Committee: Business,
Professions Vote: 13-0
Urgency: No State Mandated Local Program:
No Reimbursable: No
SUMMARY
This bill restricts the continuing education (CE) requirement
hours for retired dentist who provides only uncompensated care
to a maximum of 60% of that required for non-retired active
dentists and requires the Dental Board to report on the outcome
of this CE change at the time of its regular sunset review
process.
FISCAL EFFECT
Minor, absorbable costs for reporting on the CE provision as
part of the Board's regular sunset review.
COMMENTS
Rationale . The California Dental Association (CDA) is
sponsoring this measure to encourage retired dentists to provide
free care to underserved populations by reducing the number of
CE hours required for license renewal from 50 to 30. According
to CDA, state budget cuts have cut access to dental services
forcing more people to rely on charity care. CDA hosts several
free clinics, which rely on volunteer dentists.
