An act to amend Section 8241 of, and to amend the heading of Chapter 3.1 (commencing with Section 8241) of Division 1 of Title 2 of, the Government Code, relating to state government.

AB 960, as introduced, Campos. State government: Commission on the Status of Women and Girls.

Existing law creates within state government the Commission on the Status of Women and Girls, consisting of 17 members, including 7 public members appointed by the Governor, with the consent of the Senate.

This bill would require one of the 7 public members appointed by the Governor to be a woman veteran or a female member of the military.

Vote: majority. Appropriation: no. Fiscal committee: yes. State-mandated local program: no.

The people of the State of California do enact as follows:

The heading of Chapter 3.1 (commencing with

SEC. 2.  

Section 8241 of the Government Code is amended to
2read:

8241.  

(a) There is in the state government the Commission on
4the Status of Women and Girls. The commission shall consist of
517 members to be appointed as follows:

6(1) Three Members of the Senate and one public member
7appointed by the Senate Committee on Rules.

8(2) Three Members of the Assembly and one public member
9appointed by the Speaker.

10(3) One public member appointed by the Superintendent of
11Public Instruction, and the Chief of the Division of Industrial
12Welfare in the Department of Industrial Relations.

15(B) One of these public members shall be a woman veteran or
16a female member of the military.

17(b) The Members of the Legislature shall serve at the pleasure
18of the appointing powers.

19(c) Public member appointees of the Speaker and the Senate
20Committee on Rules, and appointees of the Governor shall serve
21four-year terms. All persons appointed pursuant to Section 2 of
22Chapter 1378 of the Statutes of 1965, as amended by Chapter 382
23of the Statutes of 1973, shall continue in office until the expiration
24of their term and the appointment of their successors. The
25appointing powers may reappoint a member whose term has
26expired, and shall immediately fill any vacancy for the unexpired
27portion of the term in which it occurs. The appointing powers shall,
28in making appointments of public members to the commission,
29make every effort to ensure that there is a geographic balance of
30representation on the commission.

31(d) All appointees shall hold office until the appointment of
32their successors.
