   An act to amend Section 27701 of the Government Code, relating to
public defenders.


	LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST


   SB 16, as introduced, Gaines. Public defenders.
   Existing law prescribes specified qualifications for a person to
hold the office of public defender.
   This bill would make technical, nonsubstantive changes to that
provision.
   Vote: majority. Appropriation: no. Fiscal committee: no.
State-mandated local program: no.


THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

  SECTION 1.  Section 27701 of the Government Code is amended to
read:
   27701.  A person is not eligible to  hold  the office of
public defender unless he  or she  has been a practicing
attorney in all of the courts of  the State  
this state  for at least the year preceding the date of his 
or her  election or appointment.
