Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 14—Relative to California Library Week.

This measure would declare April 14 to April 20, 2013, inclusive, as California Library Week.

P1    1WHEREAS, California Library Week seeks to partner with the
2efforts surrounding National Library Week, which is being
3celebrated in public libraries throughout the United States from
4April 14 to April 20, 2013, inclusive; and

5WHEREAS, More than 21 million people use California’s public
6libraries each year; and

7WHEREAS, California’s public libraries are changing and
8dynamic places, offering books, computers, Internet access, e-mail
9reference, eBooks, and other innovative services to connect their
10users with ideas and information; and

11WHEREAS, California’s public libraries are valued community
12centers providing education, information, knowledge, and
13entertainment; and

14WHEREAS, California’s public libraries and librarians advance
15teaching and learning by helping students, faculty, seniors,
16veterans, researchers, and other members of the general public
17obtain the best, most accurate, and complete information; and

P2    1WHEREAS, California’s public libraries provide equal and
2economical services to library users, and in many cases, serve as
3a community’s only point of access to resources for learning; and

4WHEREAS, California’s public libraries provide technology
5training and help to bridge the digital divide for those who do not
6have access to technology at home or at school; and

7WHEREAS, California’s public libraries change lives by serving
8over 20,000 adults annually through customized literacy services
9delivered primarily through trained volunteers, who contribute
10over 750,000 hours annually to assist adults in learning how to
11read; and

12WHEREAS, The students of California are a rapidly growing
13group of library users, visiting the state’s public libraries after
14school and on weekends for homework assistance and for materials
15to use in school assignments; and

16WHEREAS, California’s public libraries are important
17community educational resources, providing books and innovative
18programs and services such as preschool literacy readiness, Toddler
19Times, the Summer Reading Program, Grandparents and Books,
20and Reach Out and Read in conjunction with pediatric clinics; and

21WHEREAS, This year the California State Library will be
22celebrating its 163rd year of providing technical assistance and
23consultation to California’s public libraries, and preserving and
24hosting an abundance of California’s priceless historical items;
25and

26WHEREAS, California’s public libraries preserve our cultural
27heritage, inform our present, and inspire our future; now therefore,
28be it

29Resolved, by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
30thereof concurring,
That the Legislature declares the week of April
3114 to April 20, 2013, inclusive, as California Library Week, and
32commends California’s public libraries, librarians, and all library
33workers for enriching the lives of California residents and helping
34to make our state an exceptional place to live, learn, and work;
35and be it further

36Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
37this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
