This measure would designate April 7 to 13, 2012, inclusive, as Cancer Prevention Week, and would encourage individuals to participate in the Cancer Prevention Study - 3.

P1 1WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention
2Study - 3 is recruiting 300,000 adults across the United States to
3help better understand the genetic, environmental, and lifestyle
4factors that cause or prevent cancer; and
5WHEREAS, In 2013, more than 1,342,000 people will live with
6a history of cancer, nearly 144,800 will be diagnosed with cancer,
7and nearly 55,500 will die of cancer; and
8WHEREAS, From 1988 to 2010, cancer incidence rates in
9California declined by 9 percent; and
10WHEREAS, Despite these improvements, nearly one in two
11Californians born today will develop cancer at some point in their
12lives, and it is likely that one in five will die of the disease; and
13WHEREAS, The exact reasons why one individual develops
14cancer, and another individual with very similar life experiences
15does not, are beyond scientific understanding. Just as there are
16many different types of cancers, there are many factors that
17contribute to an individual’s risk of developing cancer; and
P2 1WHEREAS, The goal of the American Cancer Society’s Cancer
2Prevention Study - 3 is to better understand those factors that
3contribute to cancer; now, therefore, be it
4Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
5thereof concurring, That the Legislature declares the week of April
67 to 13, 2013, as “Cancer Prevention Week,” and encourages
7individuals to participate in the Cancer Prevention Study - 3; and
8be it further
9Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
10this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
