Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 17—Relative to Cancer Prevention Week.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

SCR 17, as amended, Anderson. Cancer Prevention Week.

This measure would designate April 7 to 13, 2012, inclusive, as Cancer Prevention Week, and would encourage individuals to participate in the Cancer Prevention Study - 3.

P1    1WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention
2Study - 3 is recruiting 300,000 adults across the United States to
P1    1help better understand the genetic, environmental, and lifestyle
2factors that cause or prevent cancer; and

3WHEREAS, In 2013, more than 1,342,000 people will live with
4a history of cancer, nearly 144,800 will be diagnosed with cancer,
5and nearly 55,500 will die of cancer; and

6WHEREAS, From 1988 to 2010, cancer incidence rates in
7California declined by 9 percent; and

8WHEREAS, Despite these improvements, nearly one in two
9Californians born today will develop cancer at some point in their
10lives, and it is likely that one in five will die of the disease; and

11WHEREAS, The exact reasons why one individual develops
12cancer, and another individual with very similar life experiences
13does not, are beyond scientific understanding. Just as there are
14many different types of cancers, there are many factors that
15contribute to an individual’s risk of developing cancer; and

16WHEREAS, The goal of the American Cancer Society’s Cancer
17Prevention Study - 3 is to better understand those factors that
18contribute to cancer; now, therefore, be it

19Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
20thereof concurring,
That the Legislature declares the week of April
217 to 13, 2013, as “Cancer Prevention Week,” and encourages
22individuals to participate in the Cancer Prevention Study - 3; and
23be it further

24Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
25this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
