FEBRUARY 28, 2013
Relative to Cancer Prevention Week.
LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST
SCR 17, Anderson. Cancer Prevention Week.
This measure would designate April 7 to 13, 2013, inclusive, as
Cancer Prevention Week, and would encourage individuals to
participate in the Cancer Prevention Study - 3.
WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society's Cancer Prevention Study - 3
is recruiting 300,000 adults across the United States to help better
understand the genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that
cause or prevent cancer; and
WHEREAS, In 2013, more than 1,342,000 people will live with a
history of cancer, nearly 144,800 will be diagnosed with cancer, and
nearly 55,500 will die of cancer; and
WHEREAS, From 1988 to 2010, cancer incidence rates in California
declined by 9 percent; and
WHEREAS, Despite these improvements, nearly one in two
Californians born today will develop cancer at some point in their
lives, and it is likely that one in five will die of the disease; and
WHEREAS, The exact reasons why one individual develops cancer, and
another individual with very similar life experiences does not, are
beyond scientific understanding. Just as there are many different
types of cancers, there are many factors that contribute to an
individual's risk of developing cancer; and
WHEREAS, The goal of the American Cancer Society's Cancer
Prevention Study - 3 is to better understand those factors that
contribute to cancer; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
thereof concurring, That the Legislature declares the week of April 7
to 13, 2013, as "Cancer Prevention Week," and encourages individuals
to participate in the Cancer Prevention Study - 3; and be it further
Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this
resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
