This measure would honor the 125th anniversary of the founding of the United Way.

P1 1WHEREAS, In 2012, the United Way celebrated the 125th
2anniversary of its founding; and
3WHEREAS, The United Way was founded in Denver in 1887;
4and
P2 1WHEREAS, Today, the United Way is the largest privately
2funded, nonprofit corporation in the nation and the world, with
3more than 1,800 United Ways in 41 countries and territories; and
4WHEREAS, The focus of the United Way is identifying and
5resolving pressing community issues, as well as making measurable
6changes in the communities through partnerships with schools,
7government agencies, businesses, organized labor, financial
8institutions, community development corporations, voluntary and
9neighborhood associations, the faith community, and others; and
10WHEREAS, The issues the United Way focuses on are
11determined locally because of the diversity of the communities
12served; and
13WHEREAS, The United Way’s overall framework, however,
14includes education, income, and health; and
15WHEREAS, The United Way builds on community strengths
16and assets, helps individuals and groups with specific community
17interests, finds ways for them to contribute their time and talents,
18supports direct-service programs and community-change efforts,
19and advocates public policy changes; and
20WHEREAS, Millions of corporations and businesses partner
21with the United Way to address community needs; and
22WHEREAS, The United Way of California improves the health,
23education, and financial results of low-income children and families
24by enhancing and coordinating the advocacy and community
25impact work of California’s United Ways; and
26WHEREAS, California’s independent, local United Ways
27created United Ways of California to help them work together to
28advance their mutual goals; and
29WHEREAS, California’s local United Ways do vital work in
30their communities. They collectively raise over $200 million per
31year in charitable gifts for targeted investments and critical health,
32education, and human services; and
33WHEREAS, By working together through United Ways of
34California, the local United Ways can more effectively pursue
35opportunities and develop resources across multiple regions and
36the entire state, and better influence the state policy environment,
37which has a significant impact on local United Ways’ success in
38their communities; and
39WHEREAS, Individually and together, California’s United
40Ways build a stronger California by mobilizing our public, private,
P3 1and nonprofit sectors through research, civic engagement, public
2policy advocacy, and results-based funding; and
3WHEREAS, The United Way organizations in this state advance
4the common good and improve communities across this state as
5places to live and to do business through strategic investments,
6initiatives, partnerships, and advocacy; now, therefore, be it
7Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
8thereof concurring, That the Legislature honors the United Way
9regarding the 125th anniversary of its founding and encourage all
10residents of this state to support the United Way; and be it further
11Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
12this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
