This measure would annually, commencing April 2013, proclaim the 3rd week of April as California Osteopathic Medicine Week.

P1 1WHEREAS, There are 80,000 osteopathic physicians currently
2practicing medicine in the United States; and
3WHEREAS, Osteopathic physicians make up one-fifth of all
4practicing physicians in the United States; and
5WHEREAS, There are 4,500 osteopathic physicians currently
6residing and practicing medicine in the State of California; and
7WHEREAS, California is home to two fully accredited
8osteopathic medical schools; and
9WHEREAS, Osteopathic physicians have provided quality
10health care and health education outreach to all of California’s
11residents since the founding of the Osteopathic Medical Board of
12California in 1922; and
13WHEREAS, Osteopathic physicians seek to provide the best
14and highest quality health care to all individuals regardless of race,
15religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic standing;
16and
P2 1WHEREAS, Osteopathic physicians seek to treat the whole
2person through the practice of medicine and hands-on
3manipulation; and
4WHEREAS, Osteopathic physicians seek to bring a humanistic
5world view of treatment and care to patients and individuals in
6need; and
7WHEREAS, Osteopathic physicians are licensed to practice in
8all areas and specialties and may prescribe medication and perform
9surgery; and
10WHEREAS, Osteopathic physicians have played an influential
11role in shaping health care policies that have affected the health
12and well-being of all citizens of the State of California; and
13WHEREAS, National Osteopathic Medicine (NOM) Week is
14celebrated during the third week of April annually. NOM Week
15brings the osteopathic medical profession together to focus on the
16common goal of increasing awareness of osteopathic medicine
17and osteopathic physicians in communities across the country;
18now, therefore, be it
19Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
20thereof concurring, That annually, commencing April 2013, the
21third week of April be hereby proclaimed as California Osteopathic
22Medicine Week; and be it further
23Resolved, That the Legislature encourages all citizens and
24community organizations to support the observance of California
25Osteopathic Medicine Week by helping to educate residents about
26osteopathic physicians and osteopathic medicine; and be it further
27Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
28this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
