This bill would designate a specified portion of State Route 25 as the Pinnacles National Park Highway. The measure would request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.

P1 1WHEREAS, Pinnacles National Park is a protected mountainous
2region comprising 26,000 acres of the Gabilan Range in San Benito
3and Monterey counties, located about 40 miles inland from the
4Pacific Ocean, 5 miles east of Soledad, and about 80 miles
5southeast of San Jose; and
6WHEREAS, Pinnacles National Park is named for the jagged
7rock spires and caves that were formed by an ancient volcano and
8that typify the park; and
9WHEREAS, Pinnacles National Park is home to many species
10of flora and fauna unique to the region, including the California
11Buckeye, California Quail, Prairie Falcon, and the California
12Condor; and
P2 1WHEREAS, Pinnacles National Park draws approximately
2400,000 visitors each year, generating $8.4 million of annual
3economic benefit for the surrounding area; and
4WHEREAS, Many of these visitors access the park via State
5Route 25, which is located between Interstate 101 near Gilroy and
6State Route 198; and
7WHEREAS, Pinnacles Forest Reserve was designated in 1906,
8and two years later President Theodore Roosevelt established
9Pinnacles National Monument; and
10WHEREAS, On January 10, 2013, President Barack Obama
11signed into law House Bill No. 3641 that created Pinnacles
12National Park from the former Pinnacles National Monument;
13now, therefore, be it
14Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
15thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates that
16portion of State Route 25 that lies solely within the exterior
17boundaries of the County of San Benito as the Pinnacles National
18Park Highway; and be it further
19Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested
20to determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the
21signing requirements for the state highway system showing this
22special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate
23sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs; and be it
24further
25Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
26this resolution to the Department of Transportation and to the
27author for appropriate distribution.
