Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 37—Relative to Arthritis Awareness Month.

SCR 37, as amended, Beall. Arthritis Awareness Month.

This measure would proclaim the month of May 2013 as Arthritis Awareness Month.

P1    1WHEREAS, Arthritis includes more than 100 rheumatic diseases
2and conditions that affect joints, the tissues that surround joints,
3and other connective tissue; and

P2    1WHEREAS, Arthritis causes pain and loss of movement, and
2can limit everyday activities such as walking and dressing; and

3WHEREAS, An estimated 50 million adults, or approximately
4one in five adults, in the United States are living with some form
5of doctor-diagnosed arthritis or a related disease or condition; and

6WHEREAS, An estimated 300,000 children under 18 years of
7age, or approximately one in 250 children, in the United States
8have some form of arthritis or rheumatic condition; and

9WHEREAS, Arthritis is a chronic health problem and the
10nation’s leading cause of physical disability among Americans
11over 15 years of age; and

12WHEREAS, Arthritis costs the United States economy more
13than $128 billion each year in lost wages and health care costs;
14and

15WHEREAS, Arthritis results in approximately 992,100
16hospitalizations and 44 million outpatient visits each year; and

17WHEREAS, In California there are more than 5.3 million people
18living with arthritis, including 38,000 children; and

19WHEREAS, An estimated 67 million adults 18 years of age and
20older, representing 25 percent of the population of the United
21States, will have doctor-diagnosed arthritis by the year 2030; now,
22therefore, be it

23Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
24thereof concurring,
That the Legislature understands the extent
25of, and sympathizes with, the severity of the impact of arthritis on
26Californians; and be it further

27Resolved, That the Legislature recognizes the month of May
282013 as Arthritis Awareness Month and appreciates the efforts of
29the California Arthritis Foundation Council to seek access to care
30for all Californians; and be it further

31Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
32this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
