Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 41—Relative to Motorcycle Awareness Month.

SCR 41, as introduced, Huff. Motorcycle Awareness Month.

This measure would proclaim May 2013 as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in California.

P1    1WHEREAS, In 1987, the State of California initiated a
2statewide, multifaceted motorcycle safety program designed to
3promote safety through the education and training of novice
4motorcycle riders; and

5WHEREAS, Beginning in 2008, the California Highway Patrol
6partnered with public and private motorcycle safety stakeholder
7organizations to develop a comprehensive effort to address a steep,
810-year increase of motorcyclist fatalities and injuries on the state’s
9roadways; and

10WHEREAS, Motorcyclists throughout the state raise funds for
11the less fortunate through charity runs and benefits, and encourage
12continued involvement within their communities; and

13WHEREAS, During the month of May 2013, the California
14Motorcyclist Safety Program, the California Highway Patrol, and
15national, state, and local motorcycle safety organizations will join
16together in an effort to increase awareness by motorcyclists and
P2    1motorists of the need to safely coexist in California’s roadways;
2and

3WHEREAS, Since its inception, the California Motorcyclist
4Safety Program has set a national record and leads the nation with
5over 843,000 motorcyclists trained; and

6WHEREAS, California motorcyclists are encouraged to properly
7outfit themselves with proper protective equipment, licensing, and
8insurance, and to adhere to our state’s rules of the road; and

9WHEREAS, The California Highway Patrol and the California
10Motorcyclist Safety Program are committed to educating
11motorcycle riders and operators about other vehicles to reduce the
12pain, suffering, and economic loss that result from traffic collisions,
13through education on the dangers of impaired riding and the need
14for other motorists to be aware of motorcycles among the mix of
15vehicles used for transportation; now, therefore, be it

16Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
17thereof concurring,
That the Legislature proclaims May 2013 as
18Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in California; and be it further

19Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
20this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
