SCR 41, as introduced, Huff. Motorcycle Awareness Month.
This measure would proclaim May 2013 as Motorcycle Safety
Awareness Month in California.
Fiscal committee: no.
WHEREAS, In 1987, the State of California initiated a statewide,
multifaceted motorcycle safety program designed to promote safety
through the education and training of novice motorcycle riders; and
WHEREAS, Beginning in 2008, the California Highway Patrol
partnered with public and private motorcycle safety stakeholder
organizations to develop a comprehensive effort to address a steep,
10-year increase of motorcyclist fatalities and injuries on the state'
s roadways; and
WHEREAS, Motorcyclists throughout the state raise funds for the
less fortunate through charity runs and benefits, and encourage
continued involvement within their communities; and
WHEREAS, During the month of May 2013, the California Motorcyclist
Safety Program, the California Highway Patrol, and national, state,
and local motorcycle safety organizations will join together in an
effort to increase awareness by motorcyclists and motorists of the
need to safely coexist in California's roadways; and
WHEREAS, Since its inception, the California Motorcyclist Safety
Program has set a national record and leads the nation with over
843,000 motorcyclists trained; and
WHEREAS, California motorcyclists are encouraged to properly
outfit themselves with proper protective equipment, licensing, and
insurance, and to adhere to our state's rules of the road; and
WHEREAS, The California Highway Patrol and the California
Motorcyclist Safety Program are committed to educating motorcycle
riders and operators about other vehicles to reduce the pain,
suffering, and economic loss that result from traffic collisions,
through education on the dangers of impaired riding and the need for
other motorists to be aware of motorcycles among the mix of vehicles
used for transportation; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
thereof concurring, That the Legislature proclaims May 2013 as
Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in California; and be it further
Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this
resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
