P1 1WHEREAS, Our great state and nation strive to promote the
2egalitarian principles of equality and justice where all people have
3inalienable rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of
4happiness; and
5WHEREAS, California’s and America’s diversity is one of our
6greatest strengths; and
7WHEREAS, To achieve a just and fair society, we must teach
8our children to respect one another, to appreciate our differences,
9and to recognize the common good in all of us; and
10WHEREAS, Our great state protects its residents from
11discrimination and harassment based on actual or perceived race,
12color, religion, ancestry, ethnicity, national origin, physical or
13mental ability, medical condition, sex, including gender identity
14or expression, or sexual orientation; and
15WHEREAS, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
16have made important and lasting contributions to our great state
17and nation in every field of endeavor, including, but not limited
18to, business, medicine, law, humanities, science, literature, politics,
19education, music, philanthropy, sports, arts, and culture, that enrich
20our national life; and
21WHEREAS, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
22come from all walks of life, regardless of race, color, religion,
23ancestry, ethnicity, national origin, economic status, physical or
P2 1mental ability, medical condition, sex, or gender identity or
2expression; and
3WHEREAS, For the first time in the history of the United States,
4a sitting President and Vice President, President Barack Obama
5and Vice President Joe Biden, affirmed their support for the
6fundamental right to marry, regardless of sexual orientation or
7gender. Former Vice President Dick Cheney and former First Lady
8Laura Bush have also affirmed their support for marriage equality;
9and
10WHEREAS, More lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
11are being elected to public offices across the country; and
12WHEREAS, While our great state and nation have progressed
13in our journey toward dignity, understanding, and mutual respect
14for all, we still have a long way to go in eradicating the prejudice
15and discrimination that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender
16people and their families encounter, and to this end, we call for
17the passage of the inclusive federal Employment
18Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and comprehensive immigration
19reform; and
20WHEREAS, To build a stronger and better state and nation, we
21must continue to help advance the cause of equality for all people;
22and
23WHEREAS, Our friends and allies have shown considerable
24support and commitment to the struggles of lesbian, gay, bisexual,
25and transgender people; and
26WHEREAS, Each year, June marks the anniversary of the
27Stonewall Rebellion that gave birth to the modern lesbian, gay,
28bisexual, and transgender civil rights movement; and
29WHEREAS, President Barack Obama has proclaimed June as
30Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month and
31reaffirmed his administration’s goal of eliminating prejudice
32everywhere it exists and to celebrate the great diversity of the
33American people; and
34WHEREAS, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans,
35their families and friends, and all those committed to justice and
36equality celebrate, during the month of June, the rich culture, the
37notable achievements, and the outstanding services that lesbian,
38gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans make to our great state
39and nation; now, therefore, be it
P3 1Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, That the Senate
2proclaims June 2013 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender
3(LGBT) Pride Month, urges all residents to join in celebrating the
4culture, accomplishments, and contributions of lesbian, gay,
5bisexual, and transgender people, and encourages the people of
6California to work to help advance the cause of equality for lesbian,
7gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their families; and be it
8further
9Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
10this resolution to the Members of the Legislature and to the author
11for appropriate distribution.
