This measure would designate 2 specified portions ofbegin delete State Highway Route 96end deletebegin insert State Highway Route 5end insert in Siskiyou County as the Shawn Baker andbegin delete Joseph “Robert”end deletebegin insert Robertend insert Jones Memorial Highways, respectively. The measure would also request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing these special designations and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering the cost, to erect those signs.

2up in New Mexico and Alaska; and
3WHEREAS, Mr. Baker served his country in the United States
4Navy for five years; and
5WHEREAS, In 1999, Mr. Baker and his family moved to
6Siskiyou County and eventually settled in Weed, California; and
7WHEREAS, Mr. Baker enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling,
8riding his quad bike, climbing, playing water sports, working with
P2 1wood, and renovating his home, and could always be found in the
2middle of a project; and
3WHEREAS, On Januarybegin delete 1, 2004,end deletebegin insert 31, 2001,end insert Mr. Baker began
4his career with the Department of Transportation as a
5permanent-intermittent equipment operator in Yreka, California,
6and then transferred to the Yreka special projects crew in April
72004; and
8WHEREAS, Mr. Baker was hired as a permanent full-time
9equipment operator in November 2004,begin delete andend delete thenbegin delete in December transferred to the Grass Lake maintenance
102004,end deletebegin delete crew;end deletebegin insert crew in
11December 2004 and the Yreka special projects crew in April 2006;end insert

13WHEREAS,begin delete Joseph “Robert”end deletebegin insert Robertend insert Jones was born on April
1415, 1973, in Yreka, California, to Marty Mangrum and Jim Jones;
15and
16WHEREAS, Mr. Jones attended schools in Yreka and Montague
17up until his junior year in high school, when he transferred to South
18Fork High School in Humboldt County, from which he graduated
19in 1991; and
20WHEREAS, The Department of Transportation hired Mr. Jones
21in November 2005 as a temporary employee for the Mount Shasta
22maintenance crew; and
23WHEREAS, Mr. Jones became a permanent-intermittent
24equipment operator for the Mount Shastabegin insert maintenanceend insert crew in
25November 2006, and then transferred to the Yrekabegin insert special projectsend insert
26 crew in December 2006; and
27WHEREAS, In June 2008, Mr. Jones was hired as a permanent
28full-time equipment operator for the Grass Lakebegin delete special projectsend delete
29begin insert maintenanceend insert crew, then transferred to the Yrekabegin insert special projectsend insert
30 crew in December 2010; and
31WHEREAS, In his spare time, Mr. Jones deeply enjoyed his
32time as a volunteer firefighter at the Mayten Fire Department; and
33WHEREAS, On April 24, 2013, a group of eight Caltrans
34District 2 employees was performing rock scaling operations to
35remove loose material from a rocky hillside on Statebegin insert Highwayend insert
36 Route 96 near Happy Camp in Siskiyou County when a rock slide
37occurred, tragically killing Mr. Baker and Mr. Jones, and injuring
38a third employee; and
P3 1WHEREAS, Mr. Baker is survived by his wife of 26 years,
2Tammie, his daughters, Hilary and Mariah, and his sons, Weston
3and Quinton; and
4WHEREAS, Mr. Jones is survived by hisbegin delete wife,end deletebegin insert wifeend insert of 16begin delete yearsend delete
5begin insert years,end insert Shannon, his stepson, Stephen, his son, Parker, and his
6daughter, Michael-La; and
7WHEREAS, Both men gave their lives working selflessly to
8protect motorists on the highway from future rock slides propelling
9rocks onto the highway; now, therefore, be it
10Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
11thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the
12portions ofbegin delete State Highway 96end deletebegin insert State Highway Route 5end insertbegin insert in Siskiyou
