This measure would designate the intersection of State Highway Route 99 and Riego Road in Sutter County as the Dean Patton Memorial Intersection. The measure would also request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.

P1 1WHEREAS, Dean Patton, of Grass Valley, started his career
2with the Department of Transportation as a highway maintenance
3worker in 2006, initially assigned to the Marysville special crews
4yard as part of a stormwater and bridge crew, and more recently
5assigned to the Nevada City maintenance yard; and
6WHEREAS, In his private life, Mr. Patton sought to improve
7his community through public service, active involvement in the
8Twin Cities Church in Grass Valley, helping others better
9themselves through Alcoholics Anonymous, and coaching a Little
10League team for children with special needs; and
11WHEREAS, On May 2, 2013, Mr. Patton was struck by another
12vehicle and killed while riding his motorcycle on his day off on
13State Highway Route 99 at Riego Road in Sutter County on the
14way to the State Capitol in Sacramento, as a participant in the third
P2 1annual Highway Workers Memorial Run, benefiting the children
2of fallen Caltrans employees; and
3WHEREAS, Mr. Patton is survived by his wife Trisha Flud,
4mother Joann Baldasarra, son Seth Sherman, and daughters Jessica
5Zeno and Felisha Dow, as well as three granddaughters, Brianna,
6Alyssa, and Savahna; and
7WHEREAS, Mr. Patton will be greatly missed by his family,
8friends, coworkers, and community, who will all get a measure of
9comfort knowing that the world is a better place because of Dean
10Patton; now, therefore, be it
11Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
12thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the
13intersection of State Highway Route 99 and Riego Road in Sutter
14County as the Dean Patton Memorial Intersection; and be it further
15Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested
16to determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the
17signing requirements for the state highway system showing this
18special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate
19sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs; and be it
20further
21Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
22this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author
23for appropriate distribution.
