Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 59—Relative to the William J. “Pete” Knight Veterans Home.

SCR 59, as introduced, Knight. William J. “Pete” Knight Veterans Home of California-Lancaster.

This measure would recognize the location of the William J. “Pete” Knight Veterans Home of California-Lancaster in Los Angeles County along State Highway Route 14 (SR 14) near the exit for West Avenue “I” in the City of Lancaster and request the erection of 4 directional signs at that exit indicating the location of the home. The measure would request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.

P1    1WHEREAS, The William J. “Pete” Knight Veterans Home of
2California-Lancaster (Veterans Home )is a 60-bed Residential
3Care Facility for the Elderly, an assisted living facility that serves
4veterans, where all health care needs, meals, transportation, and
5activities for residents are provided in partnership with the VA
6Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System; and

7WHEREAS, The Veterans Home was named in honor and
8memory of the late Senator William J. “Pete” Knight, a former
9United States Air Force Colonel who spent 32 years in dedicated
10service to his country, flew more than 253 missions in Vietnam,
11was a fighter pilot, test pilot, astronaut, and legislator, and who
P2    1was also considered one of the Veterans Home’s strongest and
2most vocal advocates when he served in the California State Senate;
3and

4WHEREAS, The Veterans Home is located in the picturesque
5high-desert area of southern California, just off the Antelope Valley
6Freeway (State Route 14), and is only an hour’s drive north from
7the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles; and

8WHEREAS, The Veterans Home provides California veterans
9with a living environment that protects their dignity and contributes
10to their feeling of self-reliance and self-worth; now, therefore, be
11it

12Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
13thereof concurring,
That the Legislature hereby recognizes the
14William J. “Pete” Knight Veterans Home of California-Lancaster
15in Los Angeles County and its location along State Highway Route
1614 (SR 14) near the exit for West Avenue “I” in the City of
17Lancaster and requests the erection of four directional signs as
18follows or as otherwise consistent with the signing requirements
19for the state highway system: two of the signs, one northbound
20and one southbound on SR 14, to be placed before the exit for
21West Avenue “I” to read: “Senator William J. “Pete” Knight
22Memorial Veterans Home, This Exit”; the other two signs to be
23placed at the stop signs after exiting the freeway either northbound
24or southbound to read: “Senator William J. “Pete” Knight Memorial
25Veterans Home, Left Turn” and “Senator William J. “Pete” Knight
26 Memorial Veterans Home, Right Turn”; and be it further

27Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested
28to determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the
29signing requirements for the state highway system and, upon
30receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover the
31cost, to erect those signs; and be it further

32Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
33this resolution to the Department of Transportation and to the
34author for appropriate distribution.
