Shelter Pet Awareness Month.
This measure would declare a shelter pet as the official
State Pet October of each year as Shelter Pet
Awareness Month .

WHEREAS, There are currently around eight million abandoned pets
living in animal shelters in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Each year, between 700,000 and 800,000 animals are taken
in by California's public and private shelters; and
WHEREAS, Less than half of these animals are adopted into new
homes; and
WHEREAS, Animal shelters have limited resources and cannot
accommodate all of the animals that need help; and
WHEREAS, Three In the United States, three
to four million of these dogs and cats
shelter pets are euthanized every year due to
overcrowding ; and
WHEREAS, The Legislature seeks to raise
promote shelter pet adoptions by rai sing public
awareness of shelter animals; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby declares a
shelter pet as the official State Pet the month of
October of each year as Shelter Pet Awareness Month ; and be it
further
Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this
resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
