Bill No: SCR 61

Amended: 8/21/13
Vote: 21
SUBJECT : Shelter Pet Awareness Month
SOURCE : State Humane Association of California
DIGEST : This resolution declares October of each year as
Shelter Pet Awareness Month.
ANALYSIS : This resolution makes the following legislative
findings:
1. Each year, between 700,000 and 800,000 animals are taken in
by California's public and private shelters; and less than
half of these animals are adopted into new homes.
2. Animal shelters have limited resources and cannot
accommodate all of the animals that need help; and in the
United States, three to four million shelter pets are
euthanized every year due to overcrowding.
3. The Legislature seeks to promote shelter pet adoptions by
raising public awareness of shelter animals.
This resolution declares October of each year as Shelter Pet
Awareness Month.
