SB 1098, as introduced, Torres. Commission on the Status of Women and Girls.
Existing law creates within state government the Commission on the Status of Women and Girls, consisting of 17 members, including 6 Members of the Legislature, and 11 public appointees, as specified.
This bill would add the Deputy Secretary of Women Veterans Affairs in the Department of Veterans Affairs, as an ex officio, nonvoting member of the Commission on the Status of Women and Girls.

The people of the State of California do enact as follows:
Section 8241 of the Government Code is amended 
2to read:
(a) There is in the state government the Commission on 
4the Status of Women and Girls. The commission shall consist of
5begin delete 17end deletebegin insert 18end insert members to be appointed as follows:
6(1) Three Members of the Senate and one public member 
7appointed by the Senate Committee on Rules.
8(2) Three Members of the Assembly and one public member 
9appointed by the Speaker of the Assembly.
P2    1(3) One public member appointed by the Superintendent of 
2Public Instruction, and the Chief of the
				  Division of Industrial 
3Welfare in the Department of Industrial Relations.
4(4) (A) Seven public members appointed by the Governor, with 
5the consent of the Senate.
6(B) One of these public members shall be a veteran or a member 
7of the military.
8(5) The Deputy Secretary of Women Veterans Affairs in the 
9Department of Veterans Affairs, who shall serve as an ex officio, 
10nonvoting member.
11(b) The Members of the Legislature shall serve at the pleasure 
12of the appointing powers.
13(c) Public member appointees of the Speaker of the Assembly 
14and the Senate Committee on Rules,
				  and appointees of the 
15Governor shall serve four-year terms. All persons appointed 
16pursuant to Section 2 of Chapter 1378 of the Statutes of 1965, as 
17amended by Chapter 382 of the Statutes of 1973, shall continue 
18in office until the expiration of their term and the appointment of 
19their successors. The appointing powers may reappoint a member 
20whose term has expired, and shall immediately fill any vacancy 
21for the unexpired portion of the term in which it occurs. The 
22appointing powers shall, in making appointments of public 
23members to the commission, make every effort to ensure that there 
24is a geographic balance of representation on the commission.
25(d) All appointees shall hold office until the appointment of 
26their successors.
