Specifically, this resolution makes the following legislative findings: 1)President Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in Kentucky, where he rose from humble beginnings to become the 16th President of the United States; and his legacy includes the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation and the Gettysburg Address; which is regarded as one of the finest speeches in the English language. 2)President Lincoln was shot on April 14, 1865, while viewing a performance of "Our American Cousin" in Washington, D.C., and died the next day never to see his dreams of the formal abolition of slavery and the restoration of the Union realized. 3)President Lincoln will be honored on February 12, 2015, the ACR 11 Page 2 anniversary of his birthday, not only in recognition of his numerous accomplishments and contributions to our nation, but also as the virtual symbol of the American dream.
