DIGEST: This resolution designates a portion of State Highway
Route (SR) 110 as the Officer Joe Mata and Officer Roberto C.
Sanchez Memorial Highway.
ANALYSIS: This resolution designates the portion of SR 110
between Exit 1A and Exit 1B in Los Angeles as the Officer Joe
Mata and Officer Roberto C. Sanchez Memorial Highway. The
Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost
of appropriate signs and, upon receiving donations from
non-state sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those
signs.
Comments
Purpose. The purpose of this resolution is to honor the lives

and sacrifices of Officer Robert Joe Mata and Officer Roberto C.
Sanchez.
Background on Officer Mata. Officer Mata was born in Los
Angeles and served in the United States Navy, where he was
awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Sea Service
Deployment Ribbon (First Award), and the Southwest Asia Service
Medal. Officer Mata entered the Los Angeles Police Academy on
January 22, 1996. His final division of assignment was in the
Harbor area, where he was assigned to the Specialized
Enforcement Unit, Gang Detail. On September 19, 2000, Officer
Mata was killed in a vehicle accident in the Harbor area while
responding to a call for backup from another officer. Officer
Mata is survived by his wife and two daughters.
Background on Officer Sanchez. Officer Sanchez was born in
Mexico City, Mexico, and grew up in Santa Ana. He entered the
Los Angeles Police Academy in 2008 and honorably served with the
Los Angeles Police Department for six years, with assignments in
West Los Angeles, Newton, and Harbor. On May 3, 2014, Officer
Sanchez and his partner were in pursuit of a vehicle after
attempting to make a traffic stop. While pursuing the vehicle,
Officer Sanchez's vehicle was struck by another vehicle.
Officer Sanchez was transported to a local hospital, where he
later succumbed to his injuries. Officer Sanchez is survived by
his wife.
