LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

ACR 15, as amended, Levine. California Holocaust Memorial Week.

P2    1WHEREAS, The Holocaust was a tragedy of proportions the
2world had never before witnessed; and

3WHEREAS, More than 65 years have passed since the tragic
4events we now refer to as the Holocaust transpired, in which the
5dictatorship of Nazi Germany murdered six million Jews as part
6of a systematic program of genocide known as “The Final Solution
7of the Jewish Question”; and

8WHEREAS, Jews were the primary victims, but they were not
9alone. Five million other people were murdered in Nazi
10concentration camps as part of a carefully orchestrated,
11state-sponsored program of cultural, social, and political
12annihilation under the Nazi tyranny; and

13WHEREAS, We must recognize the heroism of those who
14provided assistance to the victims of the Nazi regime, including
15the many soldiers who liberated concentration camps and provided
16comfort to those suffering; and

17WHEREAS, We must teach our children, and future generations,
18that the individual and communal acts of heroism during the
19Holocaust serve as a powerful example of how our nation and its
20citizens can, and must, respond to acts of hatred and inhumanity;
21and

22WHEREAS, We must always remind ourselves of the horrible
23events of the Holocaust and remain vigilant against hatred,
24persecution, and tyranny lest these atrocities be repeated; and

25WHEREAS, We, the people of California, should actively
26rededicate ourselves to the principles of human rights, individual
27freedom, and equal protection under the laws of a just and
28democratic society; and

29WHEREAS, Eachbegin delete person in Californiaend deletebegin insert Californianend insert should set
30aside moments of his or her time every year to give remembrance
31to those who lost their lives in the Holocaust; and

32WHEREAS, The United States Holocaust Memorial Council
33has designated April 12 through April 19, 2015, as the Days of
34Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust, including the
P3    1International Day of Remembrance, known as Yom Hashoah,
2which runs from the evening of April 15 until the evening of April
316, 2015; and

4WHEREAS, According to Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor
5and nationally recognized scholar, “a memorial unresponsive to
6the future would violate the memory of the past”; now, therefore,
7be it

8Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate

That the Legislature proclaims April 12 through
