Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 40—Relative to California Museum Month.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

ACR 40, as introduced, Calderon. California Museum Month.

This measure would recognize the essential role that museums have in the State of California as educational institutions and would proclaim May 2015 as California Museum Month.

P1    1WHEREAS, California is home to over 1,400 museums that are
2located in every county and region throughout the state and serve
3millions of visitors annually; and

4WHEREAS, California museums represent a multitude of
5learning experiences, including art museums, zoos, aquaria,
6historical societies, science centers, botanical gardens, children’s
7museums, and cultural centers; and

8WHEREAS, California museums help the state meet its
9obligations in the field of education by serving over 2 million
10schoolchildren in kindergarten and grades 1 to 12, inclusive, and
11over one million college and university students per year through
12field trips and outreach programs; and

13WHEREAS, Two-thirds of California museums partner with
14schools and school districts to provide valuable and relevant
P2    1educational programs that serve their local students and enhance
2instruction provided by the public sector; and

3WHEREAS, Americans view museums as one of the most
4trustworthy sources of objective information, and, after their
5families, the most significant in creating a strong connection to
6the past; and

7WHEREAS, California museums foster dialogue, inspire
8utilization of critical thinking skills, and support exploration to
9advance knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of history,
10science, the arts, and the natural world; and

11WHEREAS, California museums, through exhibitions and
12programs, provide access to educational opportunities, exciting
13and hands-on learning experiences, information, and the cultural
14and natural heritage that define us as a state; and

15WHEREAS, California museums provide a spark that inspires
16the future generations of scientists, artists, politicians, historians,
17and entrepreneurs; and

18WHEREAS, The California Association of Museums has served
19to bring important recognition of this commemorative month and
20invites all museums, museum service organizations, California
21residents, and local governments to use this milestone to recognize
22and celebrate the essential role California museums play as
23educational institutions as they serve communities, the nation, and
24the world; now, therefore, be it

25Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
26thereof concurring,
That the Legislature recognizes the essential
27role that museums have in the State of California as educational
28institutions and proclaims May 2015 as California Museum Month;
29and be it further

30Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
31of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
