This measure would recognize the essential role that museums have in the State of California as educational institutions and would proclaim May 2015 as California Museum Month.

P1 1WHEREAS, California is home to over 1,400 museums that are
2located in every county and region throughout the state and serve
3millions of visitors annually; and
P2 1WHEREAS, California museums represent a multitude of
2learning experiences, including art museums, zoos, aquaria,
3historical societies, science centers, botanical gardens, children’s
4museums, and cultural centers; and
5WHEREAS, California museums help the state meet its
6obligations in the field of education by serving over 2 million
7schoolchildren in kindergarten and grades 1 to 12, inclusive, and
8over one million college and university students per year through
9field trips and outreach programs; and
10WHEREAS, Two-thirds of California museums partner with
11schools and school districts to provide valuable and relevant
12educational programs that serve their local students and enhance
13instruction provided by the public sector; and
14WHEREAS, Americans view museums as one of the most
15trustworthy sources of objective information, and, after their
16families, the most significant in creating a strong connection to
17the past; and
18WHEREAS, California museums foster dialogue, inspire
19utilization of critical thinking skills, and support exploration to
20advance knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of history,
21science, the arts, and the natural world; and
22WHEREAS, California museums, through exhibitions and
23programs, provide access to educational opportunities, exciting
24and hands-on learning experiences, information, and the cultural
25and natural heritage that define us as a state; and
26WHEREAS, California museums provide a spark that inspires
27the future generations of scientists, artists, politicians, historians,
28and entrepreneurs; and
29WHEREAS, The California Association of Museums has served
30to bring important recognition of this commemorative month and
31invites all museums, museum service organizations, California
32residents, and local governments to use this milestone to recognize
33and celebrate the essential role California museums play as
34educational institutions as they serve communities, the nation, and
35the world; now, therefore, be it
36Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
37thereof concurring, That the Legislature recognizes the essential
38role that museums have in the State of California as educational
39institutions and proclaims May 2015 as California Museum Month;
40and be it further
P3 1Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
2of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
