SUMMARY: Designates a specific bridge on United States Highway (U.S.) 101 in Mendocino County as the "Jesse D. Pittman S01 Navy SEAL Bridge." The Senate amendments make a technical, non-substantive change to correct a drafting error. EXISTING LAW assigns California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) the responsibility of operating and maintaining state highways. This includes the installation and maintenance of highway signs. AS PASSED BY THE ASSEMBLY, this resolution: ACR 8 Page 2 1)Recounted the lifetime accomplishments Jesse D. Pittman, a committed family man and decorated veteran. 2)Designated bridge number 01-0165 on U.S. 101 in Mendocino County as the Jesse D. Pittman S01 Navy SEAL Bridge. 3)Requested that the Caltrans determine the cost of appropriate signs, consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system, showing the special designation and, upon receiving donations from non-state sources covering that cost, to erect those signs. FISCAL EFFECT: According to the Senate Appropriations Committee, pursuant to Senate Rule 28.8, negligible state costs. COMMENTS: Born in Arcata, California, Mr. Pittman joined the Navy in 2005 to become a Navy SEAL commando. Mr. Pittman died while serving in Afghanistan on August 6, 2011, when a helicopter transporting Mr. Pittman and 30 other American troops was shot down. This resolution designating bridge 01-0165 on U.S. 101 in honor of Jesse D. Pittman acknowledges the significant role Mr. Pittman played in his community and for his country.
