House Resolution No. 18—Relative to the Department of Motor Vehicles Centennial Celebration Day.

P1    1WHEREAS, The Department of Motor Vehicles was established
2in 1915 to register vehicles and license motor vehicle operators;
3and

4WHEREAS, The Department of Motor Vehicles is part of the
5California State Transportation Agency and is headquartered in
6Sacramento, California; and

7WHEREAS, The Department of Motor Vehicles is known as
8“the face of state government” through its 174 field offices and
9staff of approximately 10,000 dedicated employees who serve
10more than 24 million licensed drivers and process nearly 33 million
11vehicle registrations annually; and

12WHEREAS, The Department of Motor Vehicles’ mission for
13the past 100 years has been to serve the public by providing quality
14licensing and motor vehicle-related services and, through a century
15of innovation, promoting traffic safety by licensing drivers,
16registering and titling vehicles, regulating the motor vehicle
17industry and collecting revenue on behalf of state and local
18governments; and

19WHEREAS, The Department of Motor Vehicles collects nearly
20$7 billion in fees annually to support other state agencies, local
21governments, and the state’s General Fund; and

22WHEREAS, The Department of Motor Vehicles is a leader in
23utilizing technology to enhance customer service provided to
P2    1millions of Californians, offering online services to the public
2beginning with vehicle registration renewal in 2000, and currently
3offering 18 convenient online services to customers 24 hours a
4day, seven days a week; and

5WHEREAS, The Department of Motor Vehicles was named a
62013 Computerworld Honors Laureate in the Innovation category
7for its vast social media efforts using Facebook, Twitter, and
8YouTube as alternative avenues for communicating directly with
9customers; and

10WHEREAS, The Department of Motor Vehicles earned two of
11the Center for Digital Government’s Best of California Awards in
122011, for its Web-based tool for customers to retrieve their driving
13records and for “DMV Now”-the Android and iPhone applications
14that allow customers to access DMV information and services
15using their smartphones; and

16WHEREAS, The dedicated employees of the Department of
17Motor Vehicles support nonprofit organizations, such as the
18American Heart Association and the March of Dimes, statewide
19and in their local communities through volunteerism and donations;
20and

21WHEREAS, The Department of Motor Vehicles is celebrating
2210 years as the official partner of Donate Life California; and

23WHEREAS, The Department of Motor Vehicles successfully
24implemented the Safe and Responsible Driver Act (Assembly Bill
2560) on January 1, 2015, demonstrating its commitment to the safety
26of the motoring public on our California roadways; now, therefore,
27be it

28Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That
29Wednesday, May 13, 2015, is observed as the Department of Motor
30Vehicles’ Centennial Celebration Day, in recognition of the
31Department of Motor Vehicles’ century of service to the people
32of the State of California; and be it further

33Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
34of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
