House Resolution No. 21—Relative to Lupus Awareness Month.

P1    1WHEREAS, Systematic lupus erythematosus, commonly known
2as lupus, is a chronic, complex, and often life-threatening
3autoimmune disease; and

4WHEREAS, Researchers estimate that five million people have
5been diagnosed with lupus or related diseases throughout the world,
6and approximately 100,000 more are diagnosed every year; and

7WHEREAS, Recent studies funded by the federal Centers for
8Disease Control and Prevention indicate that lupus may be twice
9as common as previously believed, afflicting 128.7 out of every
10100,000 women; and

P2    1WHEREAS, Lupus strikes women primarily when they are 15
2to 44 years of age, inclusive, and it affects all aspects of their lives;
3and

4WHEREAS, Lupus disproportionately affects people of color;
5and

6WHEREAS, Lupus impacts more than just the life of the patient;
7it affects the patient’s family, friends, coworkers, employers, and
8community; and

9WHEREAS, Lupus Foundation of Northern California in San
10Jose, Lupus Foundation of Southern California in San Diego, and
11Lupus LA in Los Angeles were founded as 501(c)(3) nonprofit
12organizations to alleviate suffering for lupus patients through
13patient and family services, achieve early detection of undiagnosed
14cases through awareness promotion, and achieve the eradication
15of lupus by supporting lupus research; and

16WHEREAS, Early diagnosis and proper treatments are critical
17to the improvement of the quality of life and survival rate of lupus
18sufferers; and

19WHEREAS, Increased public awareness, education, and research
20are key to winning the battle against lupus; now, therefore, be it

21Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the
22Assembly designates the month of May 2015 as Lupus Awareness
23Month and extends heartfelt wishes to the Lupus Foundation of
24Northern California in San Jose, the Lupus Foundation of Southern
25California in San Diego, and Lupus LA in Los Angeles for success
26in their core objectives in the future; and be it further

27Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
28of this resolution to Lupus LA in Los Angeles, the Lupus
29Foundation of Northern California in San Jose, the Lupus
30Foundation of Southern California in San Diego, and to the author
31for appropriate distribution.
