P1 1WHEREAS, On May 14, 1948, the establishment of an
2independent Jewish state to be known as the State of Israel was
3declared, and this year will mark the 67th anniversary of that
4historic action; and
5WHEREAS, The United States of America and Israel have a
6unique bond based on their shared, enduring values, which are
7reflected in the virtues and principles of freedom and democracy,
8and have stood together as allies since Israel was first formed as
9a nation; and
10WHEREAS, California’s Jewish community has been active
11socially, economically, and politically in the state’s formation
12since the California Gold Rush, and that involvement has had a
13positive impact on the state’s multicultural and economic
14development; and
15WHEREAS, California is home to an estimated 2,000,000 Jews,
16making it the second largest concentration of Jews in the United
17States; and
18WHEREAS, For years, California and Israel have established
19business partnerships and trade relations with each other, and those
20partnerships have helped enhance the agricultural, educational,
21energy, entertainment, health, medical, scientific, and water policies
22in California, Israel, and the United States; and
23WHEREAS, Israel is not only the ancestral home of the Jewish
24people, and the world’s only Jewish nation, but is also inhabited
P2 1by people from all corners of the world, and those people practice
2a variety of religions, including Baha’i, Christianity, Druze, and
3Islam; and
4WHEREAS, Israel has openly and honestly negotiated with its
5neighbors for peace, and during those negotiations, has traded land
6in an attempt to achieve economic prosperity and peace; and
7WHEREAS, Israel is recognized around the world as the
8strongest democratically-elected government in the Middle East,
9and the nation’s democracy and relationship as an ally to the United
10States adds to the security and strength of California; and
11WHEREAS, In an effort to foster community, understanding,
12peace, tolerance, communication, and brotherhood, it is important
13to understand the contributions that people of all cultures and
14religions living in California have made to California; now,
15therefore, be it
16Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the
17Assembly hereby honors and commemorates that fateful day, May
1814, 1948, and this 67th anniversary, as an historic action of
19undeniable significance in world history and the beginning of a
20mutually beneficial relationship between Israel and the United
21States, especially the State of California; and be it further
22Resolved, That the Assembly believes that Israel’s borders
23should be determined by the government of Israel; and be it further
24Resolved, That the Assembly recognizes both Israel’s right to
25exist as a nation, and to exist within safe and secure borders; and
26be it further
27Resolved, That the Assembly supports Israel’s right to seek
28peace and security for its citizens, the prime obligation of any
29government, and herein expresses its support for Israel; and be it
30further
31Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
32of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
