House Resolution No. 24—Relative to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month.

P1    1WHEREAS, Our great state and nation strives to promote the
2principles of equality and justice, and the inalienable rights of all
3people to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; and

4WHEREAS, California’s and America’s diversity is one of our
5greatest strengths; and

6WHEREAS, To achieve a just and fair society, we must teach
7our children to respect one another, to appreciate our differences,
8and to recognize the common good in all of us; and

P2    1WHEREAS, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
2come from all walks of life, regardless of race, ethnicity, color,
3religion, ancestry, national origin, economic status, physical or
4mental ability, medical condition, sex, or gender identity or
5expression: and

6WHEREAS, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
7have made important and lasting contributions to our great state
8and nation in every field of endeavor, including, but not limited
9to, business, medicine, law, humanities, science, literature, politics,
10education, music, philanthropy, sports and athletics, arts, and
11culture, that enrich our national life; and

12WHEREAS, For the first time in the history of the United States,
13a sitting President and Vice President, President Barack Obama
14and Vice President Joe Biden, affirmed their support for the
15fundamental right to marry, regardless of sexual orientation or
16gender; and

17WHEREAS, The Supreme Court of the United States struck
18down a provision of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA),
19which barred the federal government from recognizing same-sex
20marriages, affirming that all loving and committed couples who
21are married deserve equal treatment and respect; and

22WHEREAS, The Supreme Court of the United States ruled that
23Proposition 8 sponsors had no standing to appeal the federal trial
24court’s decision that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional, thereby
25restoring marriage equality in California; and

26WHEREAS, The Supreme Court of the United States is now
27considering the constitutional basis for marriage equality and
28whether millions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender
29individuals across the country are able to marry whom they love;
30and

31WHEREAS, A growing number of married same-sex couples
32now enjoy the same rights and privileges granted to other married
33couples, including joint tax filings, military benefits, family and
34medical leave, and the ability to sponsor their foreign spouse; and

35WHEREAS, More lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
36are being elected to public offices across the country, playing in
37professional sports leagues, occupying the highest positions in
38business, and serving as role models for all; and

39WHEREAS, The transgender community in particular, has
40gained newfound prominence in the media, entertainment, sports,
P3    1and business, raising awareness about gender identity and the
2obstacles this community continues to face; and

3WHEREAS, While our great state and nation have progressed
4in our journey toward dignity, understanding, and mutual respect
5for all, we still have a long way to go in eradicating the prejudice
6and discrimination that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender
7people and their families encounter, and to this end, we continue
8working for the passage of the inclusive federal Employment
9Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), comprehensive immigration
10reform, and increased awareness of the difficulties facing the
11transgender community; and

12WHEREAS, Friends and allies of the LGBT community have
13shown considerable support and commitment to the struggles of
14lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people at home and abroad;
15and

16WHEREAS, To build a stronger and better state and nation, we
17must continue to help advance the cause of equality for all people;
18and

19WHEREAS, Each year, June marks the anniversary of the
20Stonewall Rebellion that gave birth to the modern lesbian, gay,
21bisexual, and transgender civil rights movement; and

22WHEREAS, President Barack Obama has proclaimed June as
23Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month and
24reaffirmed his administration’s goal of eliminating prejudice
25everywhere it exists and celebrating the great diversity of the
26American people; and

27WHEREAS, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans,
28their families and friends, and all those committed to justice and
29equality celebrate, during the month of June, the rich culture, the
30notable achievements, and the outstanding services that lesbian,
31gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans make to our great state
32and nation; now, therefore, be it

33Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the
34Assembly proclaims June 2015 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and
35Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month, urges all residents to join in
36celebrating the culture, accomplishments, and contributions of
37lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, and encourages the
38people of California to work to help advance the cause of equality
39for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their
40families; and be it further

P4    1Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
2of this resolution to the Members of the Legislature and to the
3author for appropriate distribution.
