P1 1WHEREAS, The Special Olympics is a nonprofit organization
2that serves over 4.4 million athletes around the world every year;
3and
4WHEREAS, The City of Los Angeles will serve as host to the
52015 Special Olympics World Games from July 25, 2015, through
6August 2, 2015; and
7WHEREAS, The City of Los Angeles will welcome more than
87,000 Special Olympics athletes from 170 nations to compete in
925 Olympic-type sports; and
10WHEREAS, Leading up to the Opening Ceremony, an
11international team of approximately 140 law enforcement runners
12and Special Olympics athletes will carry a torch, known as the
13“Flame of Hope,” throughout the state of California to spread the
14message of Special Olympics; and
15WHEREAS, The Flame of Hope’s journey will begin at the
16State Capitol in Sacramento and will end at the Los Angeles
17Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles 13 days later; and
18WHEREAS, The Flame of Hope will pass through scores of
19cities, towns, and communities throughout California to promote
20and celebrate the Special Olympics’ important message of
21acceptance and inclusion worldwide; and
22WHEREAS, The 2015 Special Olympics World Games unites
23the world through sports in a celebration of the abilities and
P2 1accomplishments of people with intellectual and physical
2disabilities; now, therefore, be it
3Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the
4Assembly recognizes the honor and privilege for the State of
5California to host the 2015 Special Olympics World Games; and
6be it further
7Resolved, That the Assembly welcomes and embraces all athletes
8participating in the 2015 Special Olympics World Games; and be
9it further
10Resolved, That California state agencies and departments are
11hereby encouraged to provide any necessary assistance and support
12to ensure the safety and success of the 2015 Special Olympics
13World Games; and be it further
14Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
15of this resolution to the Governor, and to the author for appropriate
16distribution throughout the state.
