P1    1WHEREAS, Reading is the building block to learning and the 
2foundation for future success; and
3WHEREAS, In 1998, the National Education Association 
4celebrated the “Read Across America” campaign to raise awareness 
5about the importance of reading; and
6WHEREAS, The California Teachers Association celebrates 
7“Read Across America” and the positive impact it has made in the 
8schools and the State of California; and
9WHEREAS, “Read Across America” is a national celebration 
10of reading that promotes literacy, reading, and adult involvement 
P2    1in the education of pupils, and will be celebrated on March 2 in 
2honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday; and
3WHEREAS, To celebrate the joy of reading, pupils, parents, 
4teachers, sports figures, celebrities, firefighters, and business and 
5community leaders are taking part in “Read Across America” 
6events throughout the nation; and
7WHEREAS, On March 2, 2016, the National Education 
8Association, the California Teachers Association, local schools, 
9libraries, bookstores, businesses, and other community 
10organizations will commemorate “Read Across America Day”; 
11now, therefore, be it
12Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the 
13Assembly joins the California Teachers Association in recognizing 
14March 2, 2016, as “Read Across America Day”; and be it further
15Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies 
16of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
