P1 1WHEREAS, On a daily basis we are confronted by the challenge
2of violence in the form of hate crimes, brutality, domestic abuse,
3and other forms of inhumanity; and
4WHEREAS, Violence takes a terrible physical, mental,
5emotional, and financial toll on society; and
6WHEREAS, Violence prevention and conflict resolution
7programs in schools and communities throughout the nation and
8world are positively affecting our families and our neighborhoods,
9one day at a time; and
10WHEREAS, Every person can move the world in the direction
11of peace through his or her daily nonviolent choices and actions;
12and
P2 1WHEREAS, An awareness of nonviolent principles and practices
2is a powerful way to heal and transform our lives and communities,
3to recognize the dignity and worth of every human being, and to
4promote peace and harmony among all people regardless of race,
5color, culture, class, language, faith, age, gender, sexual preference,
6or other apparent difference; and
7WHEREAS, The Season for Nonviolence, a national campaign
8held January 30 to April 4, inclusive, to mark the memorial
9anniversaries of noted nonviolent advocates Mahatma Gandhi and
10Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., provides an opportunity to educate
11citizens about nonviolence; and
12WHEREAS, The annual 64-day campaign, cofounded in 1998
13by Dr. Arun Gandhi and the Association for Global New Thought,
14is an educational, media, and grassroots awareness campaign; and
15WHEREAS, The purpose of the Season for Nonviolence is to
16focus education and community action towards attaining peace
17and justice in the spirit of Gandhi and King; and
18WHEREAS, The Season for Nonviolence teaches that every
19person can move the world forward in the direction of peace
20through daily nonviolent choices and actions. Through media
21attention, the Season for Nonviolence also recognizes and
22celebrates those who are using nonviolence to build communities
23that honor the dignity and worth of every human being; now,
24therefore, be it
25Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the
26Assembly proclaims January 30, 2016, to April 4, 2016, inclusive,
27as the 19th annual Season for Nonviolence, and encourages all
28citizens to participate in local, national, and global educational
29and community campaigns to honor those who are using
30nonviolence to build communities that respect the dignity and
31worth of every human being; and be it further
32Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
33of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
