P1 1WHEREAS, Sexual assault and sexual exploitation are major
2public concerns at the local, state, and national levels; and
3WHEREAS, One in two women and one in five men will
4experience sexual violence in their lifetimes; and
5WHEREAS, California’s rape crisis centers serve more than
632,000 survivors of sexual assault every year; and
7WHEREAS, More than 8 million survivors of sexual violence
8live in California; and
9WHEREAS, Sexual assault affects Californians of all gender
10identities, sexual orientations, races, ethnicities, religions, and
11socioeconomic levels; and
12WHEREAS, Perpetrators of sexual violence must be held
13accountable for their crimes; and
14WHEREAS, Public awareness and education about sexual
15violence and sexual exploitation are needed for every child, youth,
16and adult in our communities; and
17WHEREAS, Building community intolerance for sexual violence
18requires the collective voices of all citizens; and
19WHEREAS, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes represents a public
20testament to the power of men’s voices in supporting survivors,
P2 1holding perpetrators accountable, and building a community
2response against gender-based violence; and
3WHEREAS, The largest Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event in the
4world is held in Sacramento, California; now, therefore, be it
5Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That April
623, 2016, be recognized as Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Day; and be
7it further
8Resolved, That the Assembly urges California’s citizens to
9partner withbegin delete WEAVE orend delete their local rape crisis center to stand with
10survivors of sexual assault and build communitywide responses
11to gender-based violence; and be it further
12Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
13of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
