P1 1WHEREAS, Sexual assault and sexual exploitation are major
2public concerns at the local, state, and national levels; and
3WHEREAS, One in two women and one in five men will
4experience sexual violence in their lifetimes; and
5WHEREAS, California’s rape crisis centers serve more than
632,000 survivors of sexual assault every year; and
7WHEREAS, More than 8 million survivors of sexual violence
8live in California; and
P2 1WHEREAS, Sexual assault affects Californians of all gender
2identities, sexual orientations, races, ethnicities, religions, and
3socioeconomic levels; and
4WHEREAS, Perpetrators of sexual violence must be held
5accountable for their crimes; and
6WHEREAS, Public awareness and education about sexual
7violence and sexual exploitation are needed for every child, youth,
8and adult in our communities; and
9WHEREAS, Building community intolerance for sexual violence
10requires the collective voices of all citizens; and
11WHEREAS, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes represents a public
12testament to the power of men’s voices in supporting survivors,
13holding perpetrators accountable, and building a community
14response against gender-based violence; and
15WHEREAS, The largest Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event in the
16world is held in Sacramento, California; now, therefore, be it
17Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That April
1823, 2016, be recognized as Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Day; and be
19it further
20Resolved, That the Assembly urges California’s citizens to
21partner with their local rape crisis center to stand with survivors
22of sexual assault and build communitywide responses to
23gender-based violence; and be it further
24Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
25of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
