ACR 100, as introduced, Travis Allen. Kevin Woyjeck Memorial Highway.
This measure would designate a portion of Interstate 405 in the County of Orange as the Kevin Woyjeck Memorial Highway. The measure would also request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.

P1 1WHEREAS, As the son of a captain in the Los Angeles County
2Fire Department, the grandson of a smokejumper, and the eighth
3firefighter in the Woyjeck family, Kevin Woyjeck knew from an
4early age that he wanted to be a firefighter and was laser-focused
5on achieving that goal; and
6WHEREAS, Kevin grew up in Seal Beach, California, and
7attended McGaugh Elementary School in Seal Beach and
8McAuliffe Middle School and Los Alamitos High School, both in
9Los Alamitos, California; and
P2 1WHEREAS, Kevin was a very active person who loved the
2outdoors from an early age and could often be found fishing or
3diving anywhere from Seal Beach to Laguna Beach; and
4WHEREAS, Kevin spent every summer for nine years as a Seal
5Beach Junior Lifeguard; and
6WHEREAS, When he was 15 years old, Kevin joined the Los
7Angeles County Fire Department Explorer Program, a program
8that he loved because the firefighters taught him so much about
9the fire department and station etiquette; and
10WHEREAS, Kevin became an emergency medical technician
11while in high school and worked on an ambulance crew shortly
12after graduating; and
13WHEREAS, Kevin had extensive training as a firefighter, having
14taken firefighting classes at Santa Ana College, El Camino College
15Structure Fire Academy, and the Department of Forestry and Fire
16Protection Academy in San Luis Obispo; and
17WHEREAS, Kevin also spent a season in South Dakota, where
18he joined the Johnson Valley Volunteer Fire Department and
19performed indirect wildland firefighting for the South Dakota
20Wildland Fire Division as part of a Type 2-IA Handcrew; and
21WHEREAS, In April 2013, Kevin was honored to join the
22Granite Mountain Hotshots, an elite crew of 20 young men in top
23condition, based in Prescott, Arizona, who had direct wildland
24firefighting responsibilities with the ability to provide service
25anywhere in the nation; and
26WHEREAS, After successfully fighting fires and saving lives
27and property in New Mexico and Arizona, Kevin and the other
28members of the crew responded to an out-of-control fire in Yarnell,
29Arizona, on June 30, 2013; and
30WHEREAS, Nineteen of the twenty young men in the Granite
31Mountain Hotshots tragically lost their lives in the fire, including
32Kevin; and
33WHEREAS, Kevin always had a smile on his face and, although
34he was taken at 21 years of age, he lived and loved a full life’s
35worth; now, therefore, be it
36Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
37thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the
38portion of Interstate 405 between postmile 24.178 and postmile
3920.4 in the County of Orange as the Kevin Woyjeck Memorial
40Highway; and be it further
P3 1Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested
2to determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the
3requirements of the state highway system showing this special
4designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources
5sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs; and be it further
6Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
7of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author
8for appropriate distribution.
