          SUBJECT:  CHP Officer Gerald E. Dormaier Memorial Interchange.


          SUMMARY:  Designates the interchange at the junction of State  
          Route (SR) 99 and SR 166 in Kern County as the "CHP Officer  
          Gerald E. Dormaier Memorial Interchange."  Specifically, this  
          resolution:  


          1)Recounts the life and accomplishments of Officer Gerald E.  
            Dormaier.


          2)Designates the interchange at SR 99 and SR 166 in Kern County  
            as the "CHP Officer Gerald E. Dormaier Memorial Interchange."   



          3)Requests that the California Department of Transportation  
            (Caltrans) determine the cost of the appropriate signs,  
            consistent with the signing requirements for a state highway  
            system, showing special designation and, upon receiving  
            donations from non-state sources covering that cost, to erect  
            those signs.

          EXISTING LAW:  Assigns Caltrans the responsibility of operating  
          and maintaining state highways including the installation and  
          maintenance of highway signs.


          FISCAL EFFECT:  Unknown, but the measure requests that Caltrans  
          only erect the appropriate signage upon receiving donations from  
          non-state sources covering the cost.


          COMMENTS:  Officer Gerald E. Dormaier was born on June 15, 1938  
          in Arvin, California.  Officer Dormaier graduated from  
          Bakersfield High School in 1955 and went on to study at  
          Bakersfield College.  Subsequently, Officer Dormaier joined the  
          United States Air Force and later, the California Highway Patrol  
          (CHP).  Officer Dormaier graduated from the CHP Academy in 1966  
          and served 14 years with the CHP in the Los Angeles, Anaheim,  
          Tejon, Buellton, Truckee, and Bakersfield areas.


          Officer Dormaier was hit and killed by a speeding tanker truck  
          on December 25, 1980, while he and his partner were attempting  
          to set up a road control for an overturned truck.  Officer  
          Dormaier was known as a hard-working and dedicated officer who  
          loved his job and was a pleasure to work with.  Officer Dormaier  
          is survived by his three children Craig, Mark, and Valarie.   
          This resolution, designating the interchange at the junction of  
          SR 99 and SR 166 in Kern County as the "CHP Officer Gerald E.  
          Dormaier Memorial Interchange" serves to memorialize the  
          contribution Officer Dormaier made to his community.
