SUBJECT: CHP Officer Gerald E. Dormaier Memorial Interchange

DIGEST: This resolution designates the interchange at the
junction of SRs 99 and 166 in Kern County as the CHP Officer
Gerald E. Dormaier Memorial Interchange. This resolution also
requests that the Department of Transportation erect appropriate
signs upon receiving donations from non-state sources to cover
the costs.

Purpose. The author introduced this resolution to honor the
life and service of CHP Officer Gerald E. Dormaier.
Background on Gerald E. Dormaier. Officer Gerald E. Dormaier
was born June 15, 1938, in Arvin, California. He graduated from
Bakersfield High School in 1955 and then from Bakersfield
College. Officer Dormaier joined the United States Air Force,
and, subsequently, the CHP. Officer Dormaier graduated from the
California Highway Patrol Academy in 1966, and during his 14
years with the CHP, served in the Los Angeles, Anaheim, Tejon,
Buellton, Truckee, and Bakersfield areas.
On December 25, 1980, Officer Dormaier was killed in the line of
duty by a speeding tanker truck while he and his partner were
attempting to set up road control for an overturned propane
truck. Officer Dormaier is survived by his three children,
Craig, Mark, and Valerie.
