BILL ANALYSIS Ó ACR 84 Page 1 Date of Hearing: June 22, 2015 ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORTATION Jim Frazier, Chair ACR 84 (O'Donnell) - As Introduced June 8, 2015 SUBJECT: Officer Joe Mata and Officer Roberto C. Sanchez Memorial Highway. SUMMARY: Designates a specific portion of State Route (SR) 110 in the City of Los Angeles as the "Officer Joe Mata and Officer Roberto C. Sanchez Memorial Highway." Specifically, this resolution: 1)Recounts the lifetime accomplishments of Officer Robert Joe Mata and Officer Robert C. Sanchez, both of whom were officers with the Los Angeles Police Department. 1)Designates a specific portion of SR 110 between Exit 1A and Exit 1B in the City of Los Angeles as the "Officer Joe Mata and Officer Roberto C. Sanchez Memorial Highway." 2)Requests that the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) determine the cost of appropriate signs, consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system, showing the special designation and, upon receiving donations from non-state sources covering that cost, to erect those signs. EXISTING LAW: Assigns Caltrans the responsibility of operating ACR 84 Page 2 and maintaining state highways. This includes the installation and maintenance of highway signs. FISCAL EFFECT: Unknown, but the measure requests that Caltrans only erect the appropriate signage upon receiving donations from non-state sources covering the cost. COMMENTS: Officer Mata and Officer Sanchez were both officers with the Los Angeles Police Department. Officer Mata was a United States Navy veteran, having served on the destroyer U.S.S. Fletcher during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. Officer Mata was killed in a vehicle accident while responding to a call. He left behind a wife and two daughters. Officer Sanchez, originally from Mexico City, reportedly believed that being a police officer was the most honorable way of serving the community and protecting the innocent. He was fatally injured in a vehicle accident while attempting a traffic stop. He left behind his wife.
