          SUBJECT:  San Jose Police Officer Michael Johnson Memorial  
          Highway


          SUMMARY:  Designates a portion of State Route (SR) 87 in the  
          City of San Jose as the "San Jose Police Officer Michael Johnson  
          Memorial Highway."  Specifically, this resolution:  


          1)Designates an approximately 6 mile segment of SR 87 between SR  
            85 and Interstate 280 (I-280) in the City of San Jose as the  
            "San Jose Police Officer Michael Johnson Memorial Highway."


          2)Requests that the Department of Transportation (Caltrans)  
            determine the cost of appropriate signs showing the special  
            designation and, upon receiving donations from non-state  
            sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.


          EXISTING LAW:  Assigns Caltrans the responsibility of operating  
          and maintaining state highways, including the installation and  
          maintenance of highway signs.


          FISCAL EFFECT:  Unknown, but the measure requests that Caltrans

          only erect the appropriate signage upon receiving donations from  
          non-state sources covering the cost.


          COMMENTS:  San Jose Police Officer Michael Johnson was born on  
          December 4, 1976, and moved with his mother and sister to San  
          Jose in 1988.  Officer Johnson graduated from Gunderson High  
          School in San Jose in 1995 and later attended West Valley  
          College.  He joined and the San Jose Police Academy in 2001,  
          serving the San Jose Police Department for 14 years as a  
          patrolman and court liaison, specializing in prescription drug  
          fraud crimes.  He was also a member of the Specialist Rifle  
          Program.  





          Officer Johnson was killed in the line of duty on March 24,  
          2015, while responding to an emergency call with his partner  
          Officer Potwora.  Officer Johnson is survived by his wife  
          Nicole, his parents Daniel Johnson and Katherine Decker, his  
          step parents Dann Decker and Penny Johnson, his grandmother  
          Frances Guillemin, and his sister Jamie Radack.





          To memorialize Officer Johnson's service and his contribution to  
          his community, ACR 88 seeks to name SR 87 between SR 85 and  
          I-280 in Santa Clara County, California the "San Jose Police  
          Officer Michael Johnson Memorial Highway."
