Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 99—Relative to Salvadoran American Day.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

ACR 99, as introduced, Lopez. Salvadoran American Day.

This measure would declare September 6, 2015, as Salvadoran American Day and would recognize the numerous contributions and rich heritage of Salvadoran Americans in California.

P1    1WHEREAS, On August 6, 1525, the official founding of Villa
2de San Salvador was declared in the Valle de Las Hamacas (Valley
3of the Hammocks) where the indigenous ancestors of El Salvador
4fought historic battles against the submission and abuse of Spanish
5colonialism in order to preserve the life and liberty of the
6Cuscatleco population; and

7WHEREAS, On September 15, 1821, El Salvador achieved
8independence from Spain and ended centuries of Spanish
9colonialization; and

10WHEREAS, In the 20th century, 40 years of internal political
11turmoil forced hundreds of thousands of Salvadorans to flee El
12Salvador, seeking peace and security in a new country, the United
13States; and

14WHEREAS, Now Salvadoran Americans constitute one of the
15largest Latino communities in California, totaling over one million
P2    1throughout the state and 6 percent of all immigrants nationwide;
2and

3WHEREAS, The history of our nation and California is a rich
4and enduring tapestry woven with the threads of many remarkable
5lives, cultures, and events, and the lives, work, and artistry of
6Salvadoran Americans has added strength, vitality, and purpose
7to that tapestry; and

8WHEREAS, The maturing Salvadoran American community
9continues to make great economic and cultural contributions to
10daily life in this state; and

11WHEREAS, Many of these admirable individuals actively
12participate in the state educational system, further promoting their
13sense of American pride within the California community; and

14WHEREAS, The strengths of the Salvadoran American culture
15can be preserved and passed on to future generations; and

16WHEREAS, Salvadoran American families, communities, and
17the generations that follow are committed to maintain both
18Salvadoran and American cultures, while promoting cultural
19interchange; and

20WHEREAS, September 2015 marks 194 years of independence
21for the country of El Salvador; and

22WHEREAS, Free of prejudices and as proud men and women,
23Salvadoran Americans participate in and contribute to the
24integration of the social, educational, professional, and political
25arena in California; now, therefore, be it

26Resolved, by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
27thereof concurring,
That the Legislature hereby declares September
286, 2015, as Salvadoran American Day and recognizes the rich
29heritage of Salvadoran Americans throughout California; and be
30it further

31Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
32of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
