House Resolution No. 54—Relative to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month.

P1    1WHEREAS, Our great state and nation strive to promote the
2principles of equality and justice and the inalienable rights of all
3people to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; and

4WHEREAS, California’s and America’s diversity is one of our
5greatest strengths; and

6WHEREAS, To achieve a more just and fair society, we must
7teach our children to respect one another, to appreciate our
8differences, and to recognize the common good in all of us; and

9WHEREAS, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
10come from all walks of life, regardless of race, ethnicity, color,
11religion, ancestry, national origin, economic status, physical or
P2    1mental ability, medical condition, sex, or gender identity or
2expression; and

3WHEREAS, More lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
4are being elected to public offices across the country, playing in
5professional sports leagues, occupying the highest positions in
6business and government, and serving as role models for all; and

7WHEREAS, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
8have made important and lasting contributions to our great state
9and nation in every field of endeavor, including, but not limited
10to, business, medicine, law, humanities, science, literature, politics,
11education, music, philanthropy, sports and athletics, arts, and
12culture, that enrich our national life; and

13WHEREAS, For the first time in the history of the United States,
14a sitting President and Vice President, President Barack Obama
15and Vice President Joe Biden, affirmed their support for the
16fundamental right to marry, regardless of sexual orientation or
17gender; and

18WHEREAS, The Supreme Court of the United States struck
19down a provision of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA),
20which barred the federal government from recognizing same-sex
21marriages, affirming that all loving and committed couples who
22are married deserve equal treatment and respect; and

23WHEREAS, The Supreme Court of the United States ruled that
24Proposition 8 sponsors had no standing to appeal the federal trial
25court’s decision that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional, thereby
26restoring marriage equality in California; and

27WHEREAS, The Supreme Court of the United States has found
28a constitutional basis for marriage equality, granting millions of
29lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals across the
30country the ability to marry people whom they love; and

31WHEREAS, A growing number of married same-sex couples
32now enjoy the same rights and privileges granted to other married
33couples, including joint tax filings, military benefits, family and
34medical leave, and the ability to sponsor their foreign spouse; and

35WHEREAS, The transgender community in particular, has
36gained newfound prominence in the media, entertainment, sports,
37and business, raising awareness about gender identity and the
38obstacles this community continues to face; and

39WHEREAS, While our great state and nation have progressed
40in our journey toward dignity, understanding, and mutual respect
P3    1for all, we still have a long way to go in eradicating the prejudice
2and discrimination that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender
3people and their families encounter, and to this end, we continue
4working for the passage of the inclusive federal Employment
5Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), comprehensive immigration
6reform, and increased awareness of the difficulties facing the
7transgender community; and

8WHEREAS, Friends and allies of the LGBT community have
9shown considerable support and commitment to the struggles of
10lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people at home and abroad;
11and

12WHEREAS, To build a stronger and better state and nation, we
13must continue to help advance the cause of equality for all people;
14and

15WHEREAS, Each year, June marks the anniversary of the
16Stonewall Rebellion that gave birth to the modern lesbian, gay,
17bisexual, and transgender civil rights movement; and

18WHEREAS, President Barack Obama has proclaimed June as
19Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month and
20reaffirmed his administration’s goal of eliminating prejudice
21everywhere it exists and celebrating the great diversity of the
22American people; and

23WHEREAS, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans,
24their families and friends, and all those committed to justice and
25equality celebrate, during the month of June, the rich culture, the
26notable achievements, and the outstanding services that lesbian,
27gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans make to our great state
28and nation; now, therefore, be it

29Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the
30Assembly proclaims June 2016 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and
31Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month, urges all residents to join in
32celebrating the culture, accomplishments, and contributions of
33lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, and encourages the
34people of California to work to help advance the cause of equality
35for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their
36families; and be it further

P4    1Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
2of this resolution to the Members of the Legislature and to the
3author for appropriate distribution.
