Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 101—Relative to Coastal Cleanup Day.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

ACR 101, as amended, Brough. Coastal Cleanup Day.

This measure would encourage citizens, businesses, groups, organizations, and public institutions to observe and participate in coastal protection activities, and proclaim September 19, 2015, as the 31st annual Coastal Cleanup Day.

P2    1WHEREAS, The State of California has 1,100 miles of coastline,
2including many sandy beaches, rocky shores, bluffs, estuaries,
3marshes, tidal flats, urban areas, and harbors; and

4WHEREAS, The natural resources of the coastal zone are among
5California’s most important economic and environmental resources;
6and

7WHEREAS, The marine environment is one of the most valuable
8resources for recreation, tourism, fishing, and other coastal
9industries; and

10WHEREAS, The State of California is strongly committed to
11thoughtful management of the state’s coastline to ensure that the
12environmental and economic value of the coastal zone will be
13sustained; and

14WHEREAS, Preserving the productivity and quality of coastal
15resources requires public awareness, support, and an understanding
16that protection of the coast is a responsibility shared by individual
17citizens, the business community, and public institutions; and

18WHEREAS, The California Coastal Commission has been the
19primary sponsor of Coastal Cleanup Day since 1985; and

20WHEREAS, Coastal Cleanup Day is the largest annual volunteer
21event in the state, with over 60 coordinating organizations and
2270,000 volunteers participating; and

23WHEREAS, Over 1.3 million Coastal Cleanup Day volunteers
24have collected over 21,000,000 pounds (10,500 tons) of trash from
25California’s beaches, shoreline, creeks, estuaries, and the ocean
26floor over the last 30 years; and

27WHEREAS, The 31st annual Coastal Cleanup Day will be held
28on September 19, 2015; now, therefore, be it

29Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
30thereof concurring,
That the Legislature recognizes the 3rd
31Saturday in September as Coastal Cleanup Day and encourages
32individual citizens, businesses, groups, organizations, and public
33institutions to observe Coastal Cleanup Day this year and every
34year, and to participate in appropriate activities designed to promote
35a healthy and productive coastal environment for the benefit of
36the people of California and the nation, and hereby proclaims
37September 19, 2015, as the 31st annual Coastal Cleanup Day in
38California; and be it further

2of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
