Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 102—Relative to Red Ribbon Week.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

ACR 102, as amended, Salas. Red Ribbon Week.

This measure would proclaim October 23 to October 31, 2015, inclusive, as Red Ribbon Week, and would encourage all Californians to help build drug-free communities and participate in drug prevention activities.

P1    1WHEREAS, Californians for Drug-Free Youth, Inc. (CADFY),
2a statewide parent-community organization, the office of the
P1    1Governor, the office of the Attorney General, the State Department
2of Education, the California Parent Teacher Association, and over
3100 other statewide agencies, departments, and organizations have
4been strong advocates for Red Ribbon Week; and

5WHEREAS, The National Family Partnership, Inc., initiated
6the Red Ribbon Campaign after Drug Enforcement Administration
7Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena was killed in Mexico by drug
8traffickers in 1985; and

9WHEREAS, Parents, youths, schools, businesses, law
10enforcement, religious institutions, service organizations, senior
11citizens, medical and military personnel, sports teams, and others
12concerned about the effects of drugs on our communities will
13demonstrate their commitment to drug-free, healthy lifestyles by
14wearing and displaying red ribbons during this weeklong
15celebration; and

16WHEREAS, The theme of this year’s effort is “Respect
17Yourself. Be Drug Free”; and

18WHEREAS, Securing a safe and healthy future for our children
19is directly threatened by drug abuse, and awareness of this problem
20will help individuals in fighting drug abuse; and

21WHEREAS, The objective of Red Ribbon Week 2015 will be
22to promote this view through drug prevention, education, parental
23involvement, and communitywide support; and

24WHEREAS, The Assembly of the State of California has further
25committed its resources to ensure the success of the Red Ribbon
26Week celebration; now, therefore, be it

27Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
28thereof concurring,
That the Legislature hereby proclaims its
29support for the Red Ribbon Week celebration by proclaiming the
30period of October 23 to 31, 2015, inclusive, as Red Ribbon Week;
31and be it further

32Resolved, That the Legislature encourages all Californians to
33help build drug-free communities and to participate in drug
34prevention activities by making a visible statement that we are
35firmly committed to healthy, productive, and drug-free lifestyles;
36and be it further

P3    1Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
2of this resolution to the Governor, and to the author for appropriate
3distribution throughout the state.
