Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 107—Relative to the Bakersfield Police Officer David J. Nelson Memorial Bridge.

ACR 107, as introduced, Grove. Bakersfield Police Officer David J. Nelson Memorial Bridge.

This measure would designate the Hosking Road interchange over State Route 99 in the City of Bakersfield as the Bakersfield Police Officer David J. Nelson Memorial Bridge. The measure would request that the Department of Transportation determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this designation and, upon receipt of donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.

P1    1WHEREAS, On June 26, 2015, Officer David J. Nelson of the
2Bakersfield Police Department gave his life while performing his
3sworn duty to protect the citizens of the City of Bakersfield; and

4WHEREAS, Officer Nelson graduated from the Kern County
5Law Enforcement Training Academy on June 21, 2013, and served
6with distinction during his tenure as a City of Bakersfield police
7officer; and

8WHEREAS, Officer Nelson was chosen as a defensive tactics
9instructor for the Bakersfield Police Department in recognition of
P2    1his advanced skill in officer safety techniques and, because of his
2commitment to excellence, was also selected to mentor and train
3police officer trainees; and

4WHEREAS, On June 26, 2015, Officer Nelson attempted to
5detain a dangerous and armed suspect who likely was planning to
6harm a citizen of Bakersfield. When the suspect failed to stop his
7vehicle as directed, Officer Nelson bravely gave chase and, during
8the pursuit of the suspect, Officer Nelson was killed in a fatal
9vehicle accident; and

10WHEREAS, Officer Nelson sacrificed his own life to save the
11lives of others; and

12WHEREAS, Officer Nelson demonstrated commitment,
13sacrifice, and courage that serves as a shining example of an
14exemplary law enforcement professional; now, therefore, be it

15Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
16thereof concurring,
That the Legislature hereby designates the
17Hosking Road interchange over State Route 99 in the City of
18Bakersfield as the Bakersfield Police Officer David J. Nelson
19Memorial Bridge; and be it further

20Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested
21to determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the
22signing requirements for the state highway system showing this
23special designation and, upon receipt of donations from nonstate
24sources sufficient to cover that cost, to erect those signs; and be it
25further

26Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
27of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author
28for appropriate distribution.
